What is White?

snowm

I am back!

I had a busy time in 2006. I like 2007 so far but it has been cold. We got a lot of snow and me and my friends made some snowmen. Here is a picture of one. I am on the end. My sister is in the pink jacket but you can't see her face because she is so hairy!

In school we read a book where one of the characters asked his grandfather, "What is blue?" and got a neat answer. So our teacher asked us to write a poem about a color like that. Since it is snowy now, I picked white. It doesn't rhyme but it can still be a poem because it makes you have feelings. Here it is. Dad fixed the spelling.

What is White?
By Art Lad

White is like the moon glistening in the summer night breeze.
White feels like a baseball getting caught in the warm spring air.
White tastes like gentle spring air blowing in my face.

White looks like snowflakes falling on a wintry night.
White acts like a polar bear looking for sea lions up in the freezing Arctic.
White moves like ice sheets on Antarctica's freezing water's surface.

White lives like penguins swimming in freezing water
Or walking one hundred miles like Emperor penguins do.
(Sound fun?)

White is clouds that blow overhead all over the world.

Now that's what white is.

That's a long poem, isn't it? My teacher saved it to give to Mom and Dad on Open House night. I guess they really liked it.

Now we're learning about fairy tales. Maybe I'll write one of those next.

Bye!

Wow, awesome poem!

I agree!

Did you know that people who think with the left side of their brain most are supposed to be more creative? They're said to be good at art and their language skills. People who think mostly with the right side of their brain are said to be better at math and logical thinking (like working with computers).

I really like your poem! I've been writing haikus lately about my pets. One of my cats, Shadow, is a Russian Blue, very serious and has a fanatical weakness for cheese. Here is what I wrote about him:

Cheese or kryptonite
Superman and I both share
a deadly weakness

I know you like superheroes, so I thought you'd appreciate it. :)

Cool poem, Thomas. I think you may be as good at writing as you are at drawing. Glad you are having fun in the snow!

What a great poem! I think I'll have my students write poems about colors like that. I hope they are as creative as you are.

some of the worlds greatest storytellers have been poets. in fact early storytellers were poets because it help them remember very very long stories that would take several nights to retell. Having long stories memorized was very helpful back then because it meant you didn't have to walk as much and you could sit by the campfire and warm your feet.

you're probably not old enough yet to read these but I'm sure your dad could give you a summary and you could draw some lovely pictures showing Beowulf killing Grendel. another would be Thetis attempting to drown her baby Achilles in the Stix Only to discover he couldn't be hurt by weapons which meant he couldn't get beaten up at school. Even better would be the Trojan horse with all of the Greek soldiers coming out and slaughtering all of the people in the city of Troy. Maybe you'd get your mom to tell you about how Shakespeare tried to get pretty girls to kiss him by writing a bunch of poems called sonnets. Note: sonnets will be much more useful to you when you are in late high school or early college. don't tell your mom I told you this though.

this is one of my favorite poems: http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/~keith/poems/Custard.html

sometimes I find myself saying "Belinda is as brave as a barrel full of bears." whenever I want to be as brave as Belinda. How brave would you have to be to be as brave as a barrel full of bears?

another favorite set of poetry is the seal poet.

daddy has a harbor seal
charming creature of the tides
they go down to the seashore
and give the children rides

So check out these big poems and I'm looking forward to the artwork. :-)

Iliad
Odyssey
Beowulf
Gilgamesh (very old school)
Mahabharatra (beginning of the universe)

Glad to have you back Thomas. That was a really cool poem. I'm glad it finally snowed so you could have some fun with The Brownie and your friends:)

Art Lad you are quite the poem writer! I could picture all you described and that's very important in a poem.

I look forward to reading your next work of art in the form of a fairy tale-

Good job kiddo!

PS- I'm so jealous of your wonderful white snow. Here in Mid Ga, we hardly ever get any. Enjoy enough for me too! (I would say toss a snowball at your dad for me as well, but that might get you into trouble, so please don't...:)

Looks like you all had a fun time building snowmen. The snowman in your picture is huge!
I'm sure your parents were very proud of you when they got to read your poem at the Open House. It's a great poem, and definitely makes me feel things.

Great job dude, very evocative. Gave me a really good sense of what white is.

Very good job on the poem, Thomas! Glad to hear from you again! I like the snow too!

Very excellent Thomas! I loved your poem. I can't wait to read your fairy tale now.

I like the poem! I wish we had enough snow here on Long Island to make snowmen. But its just really cold and icey.

I found a site of artwork I thought you might like - It's professional artists painting pictures of creatures based on drawings from little kids. Theres one of a dragon that a 2 1/2 year old painted that was really neat.
